The War Museum is located 10 km from Jaisalmer on the Jaisalmer-Jodhpur Highway near the Military Station. This unique museum has been designed with the view of honouring the contributions and sacrifices of war heroes and to highlight their bravery. The museum has two large information display halls, an audio visual room and a souvenir shop. In addition, there are war trophies and vintage equipment on display alongwith tanks and military vehicles. The murals of the soldiers, whose supreme sacrifice led to victory in the Laungewala Battle and the 106 mm Recoilless Gun (main anti-tank weapon) employed to destroy a number of enemy tanks occupy a place of pride in the memorial.
A scintillating 'Light and Sound Show' using state of the art audio visual technology is also organised at the museum which showcases the valour, pride and rich heritage of Indian Armed Forces.
The museum has a state of art audio visual theatre for screening the movie on the Battle of Laungewala. On the 'Honour Wall' are etched the names of Param Vir Chakra and Mahavir Chakra awardees who have done the nation proud and inspire future generations. The museum is open seven days a week.
History of Jaisalmer War Museum:
Lieutenant General Bobby Mathews had the idea of creating a museum as a tribute for the war heroes of the Longewala Battle in 1971. The Jaisalmer War Museum by the Indian military’s Desert Corps is the result of the same idea. The museum was constructed particularly in Jaisalmer’s desert land because of the fact that it is one of the most war-affected regions of India.
Apart from the Battle of Longewala, the army civilization and culture in this area is quite extravagant and hence, Jaisalmer certainly deserved an honor like this. Just a two-hour drive from Manvar Desert camp in Jodhpur, the Jaisalmer War Museum is a must-visit to pay homage to the rich heritage of the Indian Army.
Although the museum was created and furnished under Lieutenant General Bobby Mathews, it was Lieutenant General Ashok Singh who finally opened the museum for the general public.
